Golf downswing sequence

Try to throw a ball farther by firing your body harder, and you are likely to get out of balance and make a weak throw to the right. Theoretically, the downswing starts from the ground up, as your weight begins to shift back to the front foot and your torso begins to unwind. Thus the dreaded pull-slice we see so often, especially with the driver. The club approaches the ball from a severe outside-to-in direction, with the clubface usually open. For most average players the normal first move is a strong body move, which feels powerful but forces the arms and club well to the outside of the desired path. The key is to get all components in the proper sequence.

Your right arm (for right-handers) is straightening, and the wrists are un-cocking. Both arms rotate down and back in front of the body. The body, which has wound up on the backswing, begins to unwind and release energy into the club. Our goal is for the clubhead to swing down on the proper path, while the clubface is closing relative to the target line, with increasing speed.įour things must be happening to accomplish this correctly. To begin, let’s identify what should be happening as the club moves from a correct, on-plane position at the top and swings down into the back of the ball. Specifically, we’re looking at taking the club from the top of the backswing to impact, the moment of truth. Today we get back to making your golf swing better.
